The Northern Lakes Canoe Base (NLCB) has a long tradtion of fostering leadership through our Guide In Training (GIT) program. GITs join our staff in leading fun and rewarding Girl Scout canoe trips, as well as learning to prepare for trips, helping with support activities at the Canoe Base, and making sure participants get the most out of their adventure. We hope our GITs will return as guides once they turn 18, but we know the GIT experience will build character, confidence, and courage that can be used wherever life takes them!
To be a GIT, you need to be 16-17 and able to committ to one of our two 3-4 week summer sessions. We like to coordinate GIT travel to and from the Canoe Base with guide arrivals and departures or with our Destination participants' travel to and from Duluth. GITs are supervised by staff at all times.
Successful applicants to our GIT program bring enthusiasm, willingness to work as part of a team, genuine interest in others, and an appreciation of how a Girl Scout canoe trip can make a positive impact. Dedicated GITs become excellent canoe guide candidates and build skills that are readily applied across a variety of careers.
GITs are critical to the success of the Canoe Base and we are so grateful for their energy and their hard work! They pay a modest participation fee each summer and arrange travel to and from the Duluth airport or Canoe Base. Please contact us to learn more, apply, and coordinate travel: GIT@nlcbaa.org.
